HBCU college fair
Representatives from 44 Historical Black Colleges and Universities(HBCU) convened in Indianapolis at Crispus Attucks High School in late September. HBCU’s nationwide have a goal to increase awareness and enrollment while providing scholarships and improving higher education outcomes for African American students.
Shirley Trapp of The African American Fund was again excited to introduce black and brown students to the historical black colleges and universities, many of which were established before the Civil Rights Act to serve the African American community. There was coordination and support with BCSC school personnel which included bus transportation and an evening meal for students. Total attendance at the fair exceeded 500 kids. Fourteen students(from Columbus North, East, Signature Academy) attended the fair.
Senior students were encouraged to bring their transcripts and college preparatory test scores in the event they wanted to be considered for scholarships at the fair and follow up contact. It was a rich experience where students had an opportunity to explore and learn more about each school and interact with their onsite representatives.
